A: Geologic Legend
As indicated on the geological map, this property is situated on `kwaternęre`
dolomite formations as well as plutonic Ventersdorp-lawas on top of the Ghaapse
Berg. The central co-ordinates is:
South 28° : 01` : 17`
East 24° : 08` : 40`
(Addendum A)
(Satellite Image Tevredenheid)
As from a geological viewpoint, especially the occurrence of diamond carrying
sediment, this property`s `geological situation` is of such a nature that a geocartographic
analysis of it be seen as utmost importance.
Despite the fact that the area around Reivilo has been known by fortune seekers
since the previous century as a diamond rich area, this investigation has proven
without a doubt that a pre-historic river is situated on the northern as well as the
southern regions of the property.
Global satellite scanning of the area which was done over a wide area around the
property has indicated that these rivers meandered intensely.
B. Topographic Map (Aerial Image: Tevredenheid)
This shows the geographic area of the farm. The property is known for its waving
open plaines with Savannah vegetation. Judging by the contours, there is a slight
inclination towards the north. It is in these plutonic avenues where the ideal
`traps` were formed especially where it meets the pre-historic river flows
squarely. These structures were located using an Electron G5 Magnetometer.
The suspicion exists that during second or third phase exploration the deeper lying
colovial gravel layers should be penetrated. These are located at depths between
12 – 18 m beneath the `Rooikoppie` layers in the pre-historic meanders.
C: Analysis
During the investigation, which were done at ground level, it came to light that
earlier prospecting was carried out in the area. It is noted that in all these cases
that the `Rooikoppie` gravel was exposed to depths ranging between 26 and 50
cm. In most cases this `Rooikoppie` gravel is on top of a layer of `Brokkel
Kalk`. Since the investigation trenches were only dug to a metre, the exact depth
of the Lime formation could not be determined.
D: Description of `Rooikoppie` Gravel
Colour:
This type of gravel is typically on the dark-brown to black side of the matrix in
which stones with average size of between 2.5 – 5cm is found. The stones are
well rounded and consist mainly out of dark coloured chert and lidianite with
single instances of Milk Quartz and Quartsite pebbles. A representative sample of
this gravel was analyzed with the help of a sorting machine (diggers dream) after
which it was sent through a heavy mineral separator that was lined with a water
column to establish what type of mineral deposits are present. Traces of illmenite
and the common `Rooijaspis` (red luck) were found in the samples. These
minerals are found freely in the Rooikoppie gravel, found in all the pre-historic
canals which can be found on other places on the Ghaapse Berg. Mining results
also proved without a doubt that the presence of the two minerals can be
combined with the presence of average size diamond fields although the clarity
and size of these crystals differs significantly from those found in the deeper
underlying gravel.
Gravel occurrence and Thickness:
As mentioned earlier this Rooikoppie gravel varies from very thin up to the
mentioned thicknesses. The prominent waving of this horizontal can also be
noticed quite significantly. This in its own right is a very good sign as it shows
that the current`s energy varied from high to low and that it sorted the gravel in
such a way that diamond concentration were formed in places.
The Rooikoppie gravel could be found on top of a layer of brittle chalk about
30cm from the ground surface. The suspision exists that beneath this layer of
brittle chalk spruitgruis might be found. It will only be proved if an excavator is
used to penetrate this layer of chalk.
With the regard to the mining of Rooikoppie gravel, it is suggested that a grader is
used to remove the grass coverings of the soil, after which a Front End Loader is
to be used to `scrape` this gravel off the chalk layer only penetrating it by a few
centimeters. This mining technique brings with it significant savings as the need
for an excavator is eliminated.
Since the Rooikoppie Gravel is spread over a wide area, it is necessary that the
gravel be removed in a large area before it can be washed with a pan.
The following recommendations are made:
Remove the top layer of Rooikoppie gravel and collect it in stockpiles. Remove
the layer of Brittle Chalk (presumably between 3.5 and 6 meters thick) until the
spruitgruis is exposed. This gravel layer is then excavated right to the
Ventersdorp lawa. This gravel together with the Rooikoppie gravel is then
washed together.
Spruitgruis: (River Gravel)
As indicated on map TV-1, it is undoubtedly proven that a number of pre-historic
canals are located at the northern part of the property. The stones in this
spruitgruis of the canals vary in size between soccer ball sizes up to wheelbarrow
size, with the occurrence of diamonds ranging in sizes from 50 carats upwards.
E: CARTOGRAPHICAL RESULTS
All the findings herein were confirmed by studying the Tevredenheid Geo-
Graphical survey. In this study reference are made to the following maps:
1. Geographical map
On this it is shown that the property is geographically situated in
sedimentary and plutonic rocks.
2. Stereo-Aerial Photo
It is mainly the difference in ground color that can be observed on these,
although a combination of these photos and digital satellite data could
have been used to identify the pre-historic canals on Tevredenheid. These
results are shown extensively on TV1.
3. Final analysis map (TV1)
Two prominent pre-historic canals were identified in the higher lying
areas. As mentioned earlier, these canals are covered by a layer of
Rooikoppie gravel and Brittle Chalk and it would be possible to reach
these canals with the use of an excavating machine. The expectation is
that there are numerous hollows where significant diamond concentrations
would be found. Although the depths of the canals could not be
determined, geo-cartographically it is expected to be ranging between half
a meter up to 15 meters and maybe even deeper.
The analysis of the study has shown that there are several cavities between
the brittle chalk and underlying gravel. These cavities are naturally filled
by underground water which means that enough water for mining will be
available.
Focusing on the more central area of the property, it shows the existence
of younger paleo-canals (indicated in purple). Accordingly the sediment
in these canals will be much younger than those found in the northerly and
southerly canals of the property. The expectation exits that the energy of
the currents in these canals were weak enough that only smallish pebbles
would be found here. This will only be confirmed during fases 2 & 3 of
the exploration.
4. Square an circular structures
It is necessary to mention that several of these structures could also be
found on the property. (Straight red and blue lines and circles on TV1)
F: Final Results
All the above mentioned findings would be confirmed during fases 2 & 3 of the
exploration program. The expectation is that Tevredenheid has a high
concentration of diamonds. The results of this exploration are that among the 214
properties that were explored in a similar manner, this property could be classified
amongst the top 20.
The final results of the exploration is expected with great eagerness as well as the
economic potential that the gravel and structures that Tevredenheid may conceal.
